Just won 3000,-

by eliasen 1. september 2010 21:50

Hi all

My wife and I just received a check for DKr 3,000,- (around 400 Euro) from The Danish Cancer Society.

It’s a lottery, and we pay DKr 200 nine times a year to participate in the lottery. The good thing is, of course, that even though we loose, the money still goes to research for a cure for cancer.

I think we have played for 6 years or so, meaning DKr 10,800 and we have won DKr 200,- and then the DKr 3,000 today. So DKr 7,600 have gone to research.

Consider participating… It’s a good cause.

Blood donor

by eliasen 9. august 2010 19:35

Hi all

Today I went to the blood bank for the 23’rd time to give blood. In Denmark, you can only donate blood once every three months, and you are quarantined for a period of time if you have been ill or have taken medicine. The length of the quarantine depends on he illness and the medicine taken.

I am proud to be a blood donor and have also volunteered as a bone marrow donor, but chances are, that this will never be needed, as the chance of an exact match apparently is 1:1000000 or something like that Smile

If you want to see more about how to donate blood in Denmark, see http://www.bloddonor.dk – and sign up to do good. You are not rewarded in any way, except that when you have donated 10, 25, 50 times (and so on) you get a small gift like a pen, a vase, or something like that.

Danish politician who fails big time doing basic math

by eliasen 7. august 2010 22:08

Hi all

It’s many years ago, but today I was just reminded of it, and it is just so ridiculous that I had to share it.

Danish people (or anyone who can read (and understand) Danish, really…) can read the statement she (Aase D. Madsen) made in he Danish Parliament here.  The statement is from November 16’th 1999.

Basically, she thinks that we should spend less money on the libraries. To back this she has a brochure published by the ministry for culture that had some numbers about how much the library was used.

In the brochure it said, that 39% of all men do not use the libraries and 30% of all the women. She then thinks, that in order to find out what the percentage of all people who don’t use the library we need to add the percentage of the men and the percentage of women together, and her postulate is therefore, that 69% of the Danish population do not use the Danish libraries Smile

Using the same logic, we see, that 61% of all men use the libraries and 70% of women do. That means that 131% of the Danish population use the libraries at the same time as 69% do not… Really… funny! Smile

Martin Pagaard

by eliasen 6. august 2010 20:46

Hi all

Recently I discovered Martin Pagaard, a Danish Rock singer, song writer, guitarist, bass player and one of the very best Rock drummers in Denmark.

He has worked with numerous artists and is working on a debut album, which he has no idea when will be ready Smile - on some of his songs I am quite sure I can recognize some influence from Colorblind, which is a Danish band he played he drums in.

You really should check him out at http://www.reverbnation.com/martinpagaard where he has uploaded five of his songs. What really impresses me is that he does everything himself – he plays the guitar, the bass, the drums and sings – except for two of the songs where he gets some help with the guitar playing. He has a great Rock voice… And you can find him at:

OR, you can just listen to him here:

My first chapter has been reviewed

by eliasen 1. august 2010 23:23

Hi all

Just wanted to let you all know, that the technical reviewer (Gijsbert in 't Veld) on the book I am writing has finished reviewing my chapter about pipelines, and he called it “Impressive and very complete, acurate work!”. This is a quote, so the spelling error in the word “accurate” is his Smile

Anyway, I am naturally really thrilled that the reviewing has begun, meaning that chapters are getting handed in and I will hopefully soon be done with it. And naturally I am also happy that the reviewer likes my work. And mentioning that, let me just send a “thanks” to Randal van Splunteren who has done me a great personal favor by doing a review of my stuff before it was sent to the technical reviewer.

The book is available for preordering at Amazon UK, Amazon US, and others.

Cirkus Summarum

by eliasen 1. august 2010 12:14

Hi all

Two days ago, my two boys (ages 4 and 6), my wife and I went to see Cirkus Summarum in Århus in Denmark.

This circus is a circus created by the Danish television DR and it features a lot of the characters that the kids in Denmark see and love in the Danish television.

They perform some of the songs we know from television and a lot of new stuff as well.

My younger son was happy to see Bamse, but my older son was really thrilled so see a fight between Krigerprinsessen Tilli (The Warrior Princess Tilli) and Skyggekrigeren (The Shadow Warrior) from a Danish role playing television series called Barda.

All in all a great success… except the ridiculously long queue at McDonalds for supper after the circus Smile

New digital camera

by eliasen 28. juli 2010 10:58

Hi all

About a week ago, our digital camera decided that its time had come, and it closed down for good.

The camera was a gift we received at our wedding back in 2003, so 7 years… can’t really complain about that.

Anyway, we bought a Sony Cyber-shot DSC W350 yesterday. Nothing fancy – it is very small, so it fits into my pocket and it has 14.1 megapixels and 4xOpticalZoom. It also records videos in HD quality so I am looking forward to being able to both take pictures and record videos of my kids.

Wish us luck! Smile
